Wellness and Fitness Exercise Manual

Robert J. Karwasky, "Wellness and Fitness Exercise Manual"
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department | 2004 | ISBN: R20090725D | 62 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB

The extensive benefits of enhanced fitness and health from a regular exercise program are well established. For firefighters, maintaining a high level of functional physical fitness is a critical necessity.

Creating a work environment that is conducive to achieving and maintaining high levels of fitness and health is one of the major goals for all departments participating in the IAFF/IAFC Wellness/Fitness Initiative. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department is at the forefront in demonstrating its commitment to meeting this goal with a comprehensive package of resources. Annual medical exams, which include several fitness components, were initiated on March 1, 2000. The Wellness/Fitness staff has worked closely with each of the contracted medical facilities to reiterate our emphasis in encouraging an aggressive pursuit of high fitness levels and healthy lifestyles. New exercise equipment has been delivered to all administrative sites with instructional materials. Peer fitness trainers will soon be available to provide assistance and guidance for all fitness related questions. And of course, on-duty exercise time is provided every shift. Hopefully, all employees will take full advantage of these resources.

The purpose of this manual is to provide a basic, practical, and safe exercise guide designed to be applied to the on-duty exercise program with the equipment available at each site. It attempts to accommodate the goals of a wide variety of firefighters: those in need of reconditioning, average firefighters, high-fit athletes, young, older, male and female.

Yoga: The Indian Tradition

Yoga: The Indian Tradition
Publisher: RoutledgeCurzon | ISBN: 0700712887 | edition 2003 | PDF | 206 pages | 1,02 mb

The Indian Tradition of yoga, first codified in the Yoga Sutra of Patañjali in the third or fourth century CE, constitutes one of the world's earliest and most influential traditions of spiritual practice. It is a tradition that, by the time of Patañjali, already had an extensive (if obscure) pre-history and one that was to have, after Patañjali, an extraordinarily rich and diverse future. As a tradition, yoga has been far from monolithic. It has embraced a variety of practices and orientations, borrowing from and influencing a vast array of Indic religious traditions down through the centuries.
Recent years have witnessed an increased production in scholarly works on the yoga tradition, which has helped to chart this complex and multifaceted evolution and to demonstrate the important role that it has played in the development of India's religious and philosophical traditions. And yet the popular perception of yoga in the West remains for the most part that of a physical fitness program, largely divorced from its historical and spiritual roots. The essays collected here provide a sense of the historical emergence of the classical system presented by Patañjali, a careful examination of the key elements, overall character and contemporary relevance of that system (as found in the Yoga Sutra) and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many important ramifications in later Indian religious history.

Synthesis of Yoga

Synthesis of Yoga, the India Edition By Aurobindo
Publisher: Lotus 1996 | 899 Pages | ISBN: 8170582571 | PDF | 2.5 MB |english

"Truth of philosophy is of a merely theoretical value unless it can be lived, and we have therefore tried in The Synthesis of Yoga to arrive at a synthetical view of the principles and methods of the various lines of spiritual self-discipline and the way in which they can lead to an integral divine life in the human existence". Index.

Publisher’s Note
The Synthesis of Yoga first appeared serially in the monthly review Arya between August 1914 and January 1921. Each instalment was written immediately before its publication. The work was left incomplete when the Arya was discontinued. Sri Aurobindo never attempted to complete the Synthesis; he did, however, lightly revise the Introduction, thoroughly revise all of Part I, “The Yoga of Divine Works”, and significantly revise several chapters of Part II, “The Yoga of Integral Knowledge”. More than thirty years elapsed between the first appearance of the Synthesis in the Arya and the final stages of its incomplete revision. As a result, there are some differences of terminology between the revised and unrevised portions of the book.

In 1948 the chapters making up “The Yoga of Divine Works” were published as a book by the Sri Aurobindo Library, Madras. No other part of The Synthesis of Yoga appeared in
book-form during Sri Aurobindo’s lifetime. In 1955 an edition comprising the Introduction and four Parts was brought out by the Sri Aurobindo International University Centre. The present edition, which has been checked against all manuscripts and printed texts, includes for the first time the author’s revisions to the Introduction and Chapters XV– XVII of Part II, and an incomplete continuation of Part IV entitled “The Supramental
Time Consciousness”.
